For lovers of Great Pyrenees, there’s something unforgettable about the breed. Their calm presence, unwavering loyalty, and protective nature make them truly special companions. But these majestic dogs also come with unique needs—and when families are unprepared or circumstances change, many Pyrs find themselves searching for a second chance.
That’s where Northeast Pyr Rescue (NEPR) steps in.

A Rescue Dedicated to Great Pyrenees
Based in the Northeast and serving states across New England, New York, and New Jersey, Northeast Pyr Rescue is a nonprofit, all-volunteer organization dedicated entirely to the rescue, rehabilitation, and rehoming of Great Pyrenees dogs. Their mission is rooted in compassion, education, and a deep understanding of the breed.
Northeast Pyr Rescue works with:
- Lost or abandoned dogs
- Owner surrenders
- Neglected or medically needy Pyrs
- Shelter dogs at risk of euthanasia
Many of the dogs entering rescue once had loving homes, but life circumstances such as illness, divorce, relocation, or financial hardship can force families to make heartbreaking decisions. NEPR steps in to ensure those dogs are given a safe path forward.
Foster Homes Change Everything
At the heart of NEPR’s work is its foster network.
Because the rescue is volunteer-run and foster-based, dogs are cared for in real homes rather than kennels whenever possible. Foster families help dogs decompress, recover, and learn to trust again while giving the rescue valuable insight into each dog’s temperament and needs.
For many rescued Pyrs, foster homes become the bridge between uncertainty and stability.
NEPR also provides medical care, behavioral support, rehabilitation services, and ongoing education to help every dog succeed in its future home.
The organization works hard to teach potential adopters about the realities of owning a Great Pyrenees, including:
- Their livestock guardian instincts
- Their tendency to roam
- Grooming and fencing needs
- Training and socialization requirements
How You Can Help Northeast Pyr Rescue
Rescue work depends on community support, and NEPR offers many ways to get involved:
- Adopt a Great Pyrenees in need of a forever home
- Foster and provide temporary care for a rescue dog
- Volunteer for transport, events, outreach, or home visits
- Donate to help cover veterinary care and rescue expenses
- Share adoptable dogs to help them find homes faster
Every contribution helps save another life.
